How to Maintain Toner in Hair

If you have ever gotten your hair colored before, I am sure you have probably wondered, “Why is the color fading so quickly?” This can be very frustrating especially for how much money it costs to dye or bleach your hair. This post is going to offer some insight I have learned over the years on how to keep your blonde hair the correct tone you are desiring.

Tips and Tricks –

  • Turn Down the Temperature

If you desire to keep the tone of your hair color, you need to turn down the temperature of the water while showering. Most people, including myself, enjoy a nice warm shower. However, it is important to not have temperature too high, because this can cause the toner to rinse out of your hair faster.

  • Scheduling Hair Washing Days

One of the biggest ways to reduce how fast the toner fades out of your hair is to not wash your hair every day. It is helpful to switch to every other day of washing your hair because it prolongs the toner in your hair. I know what you are thinking, “I don’t want my hair to be greasy!” Well, I have a solution for that as well. If you invest in a quality dry shampoo, your hair will still look great and experience even more volume because of it. Better Not Younger states, “Using a dry shampoo for color-treated hair is an excellent option for extending the time between washes. You can also control oil by cleaning your hairbrush and touching your hair as little as possible.”

  • Use Professional Brands

My hair stylist has taught me the importance of investing in higher quality brands. Just like makeup, when you buy higher quality shampoo, it helps your hair remain stronger, healthier, and shinier. I personally love the brands Redken, Purelogy, and Davines. These higher quality products help maintain the toner and color in my hair way longer than my drugstore products did.

  • Investing in Purple Shampoo

Another great method to keeping a certain tone to your blonde hair is to invest in purple shampoo. What is purple shampoo? Purple shampoo is a temporary toner that helps remove any brassy or yellow appearance from the strands of your hair. If you frequently use this shampoo, it will help maintain the appearance of your blonde hair longer. One of my favorite brands I use is by Pureology. While it is on the pricier side, it has amazing results.

  • Limit the Use of Heat

Another way that can help prolong the appearance of brassy hair is by limiting the use of heat on your hair. This is one that I struggle with a ton. Just like I mentioned with the shower, heat causes your hair follicles to open up and release the color it was holding on to. This in return makes your hair have a brassier appearance.

  • Use Protectant When Using Heat

One way to avoid receiving brassy hair color when using heat tools is by using a heat protectant. Applying heat protectant before styling your hair will allow the strands of your hair to be protected from the heat of your tools. Not only is it essential to use heat protectant when styling your hair, but it is also important to use heat protectant before you blow dry your hair. It is important to read reviews and invest in higher quality heat protectant to ensure you are protecting it to the best of your ability. Without heat protectant we could permanently damage the stands of our hair, leading to breakage.

  • Wear a Head Covering in the Sun

Did you know that exposure of sun on your hair leads to your toner fading faster? Well, it is true. It is important to wear a head covering while spending time in the sun to limit the possibility of brassiness or the toner leaving your hair.
